What are the Possible Materials Which Can be Machined with Four-Axis CNC?

2024-09-04

Four-axis CNC Machining is an advanced and effective manufacturing process that makes it possible to undertake complex cutting, drilling and milling on different types of materials. Another extra axis, (the rotational axis) is added in this case above the traditional three cardinal axes to increase the flexibility of the geometries being manufactured. The application of four-axis cnc machining processes will mostly depend on those industries but it is quite a bit to say since the application of four-axis CNC machining processes will depend on those industries, it is quite broad.

Four-axis CNC machining

1. Metals

Metals are probably the most dominant material after plastic material which is quite essential in four-axis CNC machining solutions in terms of cutability.

Aluminum: Being low density and therefore very easy to cut, it is one of the most preferred materials in the four axis CNC machining. Its deployments may be witnessed in the aircraft, automobile and electronic tools/ instruments industries due to its very high strength to weight ratio and performance against oxidation.

Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is a material that is strong and can be processed into many forms and is also anti-corrosive; thus, four axis CNC machining can easily work on it. Due to its strength and anti-bacterial characteristics, RoHS compliant stainless steel is used when manufacturing medical devices, automotive components, and kitchen appliances.

Brass: Apolished metallic alloy which can undergo operations such as cutting and compression, brassesare generally employed for parts which need to be polished, in particular fixtures, valves and gears in machinery. Four axes CNC machining allows the elaborate features to be achievable since a smooth surface finish is activated.

Titanium: being a light weight, strong and corrosion-free material titanium is useful in areas such as aviation as well as the field of implantable structures and so on and thus its use is justified. Completing even the most complex tasks of titanium processing and achieving four-axial CNC machining is precise and time efficient.

Copper: Owing to its high conductivity quality, more copper is used in areas where electric currents are used. On the production of four-axis CNC Machining parts connectors, heat sinks, transformers and others precision is maintained.

2. Plastics

When talking about the processed materials, various types of plastics also fit the four axes CNC machining…but with some advantages to certain domains.

Acrylic (PMMA): Acrylic being synthetic polymer is the light weight and transparent plastic used in lighting, displays and optical devices. However, with four-axis CNC machining, ornately detailed yet precise cuts are possible for applications that demand precision and accuracy in dimensional aspects.

Nylon: Owing to its strength and abrasion resistance, nylon is incorporated in mechanical applications frequently. It is adopted more in gear fabrication, bushes and other mechanical components in most cases on CNC machines.

Polycarbonate: Polycarbonate has such properties as impact resistance and optical clarity that suits this material for its application in automotive, aerospace and building construction industries. The process of four axes CNC machining offers a great deal of transparent parts manufactured with high strength and durability.

Delrin (Acetal): With an excellent bearing ability, its a low friction bearing and its technical attributes hold very good making Delrin suits making parts such as bearings and gears. Sections of manufacture of Delrin though take long can B done by four axis CNC machining with high precision.
